And, for the rest, as Mr Curle in his study of Conrad has admirably observed, every character is faced with the enemy for whom he is, by character, least fitted. Nostromo, whose heart's desire it is that his merits should be acclaimed before men, is devoured by the one dragon to whom human achievements are nothing—lust of treasure.
[kjv] Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field. [bbe] Make your request to the Lord for rain in the time of the spring rains, even to the Lord who makes the thunder-flames; and he will give them showers of rain, to every man grass in the field. [kjv] For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd. [bbe] For the images have said what is not true, and the readers of signs have seen deceit; they have given accounts of false dreams, they give comfort to no purpose: so they go out of the way like sheep, they are troubled because they have no keeper. [kjv] Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle. [bbe] My wrath is burning against the keepers of the flock, and I will send punishment on the he-goats: for the Lord of armies takes care of his flock, the people of Judah, and will make them like the horse of his pride in the fight. [kjv] Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together. [bbe] From him will come the keystone, from him the nail, from him the bow of war, from him will come every ruler; 10:5 [hgb] 他 们 必 如 勇 士 ， 在 阵 上 将 仇 敌 践 踏 在 街 上 的 泥 土 中 。 [kjv] And they shall be as mighty men, which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded. [bbe] Together they will be like men of war, crushing down their haters into the earth of the streets in the fight; they will make war because the Lord is with them: and the horsemen will be shamed. [kjv] And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them. [bbe] And I will make the children of Judah strong, and I will be the saviour of the children of Joseph, and I will make them come back again, for I have had mercy on them: they will be as if I had not given them up: for I am the Lord their God and I will give them an answer. [kjv] And they of Ephraim shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD. [bbe] And Ephraim will be like a man of war, and their hearts will be glad as with wine; and their children will see it with joy; their hearts will be glad in the Lord. [kjv] I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased. [bbe] With the sound of the pipe I will get them together; for I have given the price to make them free: and they will be increased as they were increased. [kjv] And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again. [bbe] Though I had them planted among the peoples, they will keep me in mind in far countries: and they will take care of their children and will come back. [kjv] I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them. [bbe] And I will make them come back out of the land of Egypt, and will get them together out of Assyria; and I will take them into the land of Gilead, and it will not be wide enough for them. [kjv] And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away. [bbe] And they will go through the sea of Egypt, and all the deep waters of the Nile will become dry: and the pride of Assyria will be made low, and the power of Egypt will be taken away. [kjv] And I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD. [bbe] And their strength will be in the Lord; and their pride will be in his name, says the Lord.
"'It is because the landlords, who have been their masters, have rack-rented them, have sunk them in poverty, have plundered their own improvements, have confiscated the fruits of their own industry, have done all that they could to degrade their manhood. That is why they are backward. (Cheers.) Will anybody deny that the Irish landlords are open to this great accusation and indictment? If anybody here is inclined to deny it, let him look at the reductions in rent that have been made since 1881 in the Land Court.'
8:1 [hgb] 万 军 之 耶 和 华 的 话 临 到 我 说 ， [kjv] Again the word of the LORD of hosts came to me, saying, [bbe] And the word of the Lord of armies came to me, saying, 8:2 [hgb] 万 军 之 耶 和 华 如 此 说 ， 我 为 锡 安 心 里 极 其 火 热 。 [kjv] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury. [bbe] These are the words of the Lord of armies: I am angry about the fate of Zion, I am angry about her with great wrath. [kjv] Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain. [bbe] This is what the Lord has said: I have come back to Zion, and will make my living-place in Jerusalem: and Jerusalem will be named The town of good faith; and the mountain of the Lord of armies The holy mountain. [kjv] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. [bbe] This is what the Lord of armies has said: There will again be old men and old women seated in the open spaces of Jerusalem, every man with his stick in his hand because he is so old. [kjv] And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. [bbe] And the open spaces of the town will be full of boys and girls playing in its open spaces. [kjv] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts. [bbe] This is what the Lord of armies has said: If this is a wonder to the rest of this people, is it a wonder to me? says the Lord of armies. [kjv] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; [bbe] This is what the Lord of armies has said: See, I will be the saviour of my people from the east country, and from the west country; 8:8 [hgb] 我 要 领 他 们 来 ， 使 他 们 住 在 耶 路 撒 冷 中 。 [kjv] And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness. [bbe] And I will make them come and be living in Jerusalem and they will be to me a people and I will be to them a God, in good faith and in righteousness. [kjv] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. [bbe] This is what the Lord of armies has said: Let your hands be strong, you who are now hearing these words from the mouths of the prophets, that is to say, in the days when the base of the house of the Lord of armies has been put in place for the building of the house, that is the Temple. [kjv] For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the affliction: for I set all men every one against his neighbour. [bbe] For before those days there was no payment for a man's work, or for the use of a beast, and there was no peace for him who went out or him who came in, because of the attacker: for I had every man turned against his neighbour. [kjv] But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith the LORD of hosts. [bbe] But now I will not be to the rest of this people as I was in the past, says the Lord of armies. [kjv] For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. [bbe] For I will let the seed of peace be planted; the vine will give her fruit and the land will give her increase and the heavens will give their dew; and I will give to the rest of this people all these things for their heritage. [kjv] And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong. [bbe] And it will come about that, as you were a curse among the nations, O children of Judah and children of Israel, so I will give you salvation and you will be a blessing: have no fear and let your hands be strong. [kjv] For thus saith the LORD of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith the LORD of hosts, and I repented not: [bbe] For this is what the Lord of armies has said: As it was my purpose to do evil to you when your fathers made me angry, says the Lord of armies, and my purpose was not changed: 8:15 [hgb] 现 在 我 照 样 定 意 施 恩 与 耶 路 撒 冷 和 犹 大 家 ， 你 们 不 要 惧 怕 。 [kjv] So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not. [bbe] So in these days it is again my purpose to do good to Jerusalem and to the children of Judah: have no fear. [kjv] These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates: [bbe] These are the things which you are to do: Let every man say what is true to his neighbour; and let your judging give peace in your towns. [kjv] And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD. [bbe] Let no one have any evil thought in his heart against his neighbour; and have no love for false oaths: for all these things are hated by me, says the Lord. 8:18 [hgb] 万 军 之 耶 和 华 的 话 临 到 我 说 ， [kjv] And the word of the LORD of hosts came unto me, saying, [bbe] And the word of the Lord of armies came to me, saying, 8:19 [hgb] 万 军 之 耶 和 华 如 此 说 ， 四 月 五 月 禁 食 的 日 子 ， 七 月 十 月 禁 食 的 日 子 ， 必 变 为 犹 大 家 欢 喜 快 乐 的 日 子 ， 和 欢 乐 的 节 期 。 [kjv] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace. [bbe] This is what the Lord of armies has said: The times of going without food in the fourth month and in the fifth and the seventh and the tenth months, will be for the people of Judah times of joy and happy meetings; so be lovers of good faith and of peace. [kjv] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: [bbe] This is what the Lord of armies has said: It will again come about that when peoples and those living in great towns come, 8:21 [hgb] 这 城 的 居 民 必 到 那 城 ， 说 ， 我 们 要 快 去 恳 求 耶 和 华 的 恩 ， 寻 求 万 军 之 耶 和 华 。 [kjv] And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. [bbe] And the people of one town go to another and say, Let us certainly go with a request for grace from the Lord, and to give worship to the Lord of armies, then I will go with you. [kjv] Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. [bbe] And great peoples and strong nations will come to give worship to the Lord of armies in Jerusalem and to make requests for grace from the Lord. [kjv] Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you. [bbe] This is what the Lord of armies has said: In those days, ten men from all the languages of the nations will put out their hands and take a grip of the skirt of him who is a Jew, saying, We will go with you, for it has come to our ears that God is with you.
This was Misha, his man-servant.
“What — Mary Adeline?” she exclaimed, pausing abruptly on the threshold of the nursery. Treeshy, as usual, sat holding her baby by the fire; and from a low seat opposite her rose a lady as richly furred and feathered as Mrs. Huzzard, but with far less assurance to carry off her furbelows. Mrs. Kent ran to Lewis and laid her plump cheek against his, while Treeshy greeted Sarah Anne.
‘That’s what they mean,’ said my uncle, with something like joy; and just then the schooner went about and stood upon another tack, which put the question beyond the reach of doubt. These strangers, seeing a gale on hand, had thought first of sea-room. With the wind that threatened, in these reef-sown waters and contending against so violent a stream of tide, their course was certain death.
